Blog - Is it Time to Seek Help?

Written by:  Cathy Humerickhouse, MFTI

Several factors are necessary for people to seek counseling.

First, they must be aware that they are in pain or facing a difficult situation, perceive their feelings or the situation as problematic and believe that someone can assist them in the process of discovering their solution.  Second, the pain feels greater than the perceived barriers of finding a therapist.  Such barriers can include; time, finances, fears of sharing and what others may think.

Many people hesitate in seeking professional counseling because they feel embarrassed or ashamed in asking for assistance.  Some people are concerned that no one could possibly understand their situation.  Others fear judgment or be labeled as “mentally ill.” A number may hesitate to seek therapy because they rely on using their insurance company for payment.  Whatever the hesitation may be, the benefits can outweigh the fear.  The first and hardest step is making that phone call.  Using those fears and working through them can empower the individual, building strength and courage.  The individual starts taking “baby steps” placing one foot in front of the other and begins to work through a specific issue, building confidence.

Counseling is a process and journey.  Is it time for your journey to begin?
